Get to Know InnoVint: Joel Legris

Next up in our “Get to know InnoVint” series, we’d like to spotlight another one of our talented Software Engineers, Joel Legris. Enjoy our interview with Joel below.

What is your favorite thing about being a software engineer with InnoVint?

I could list a few things. As an engineer with InnoVint, I have the opportunity to work on a daily basis in an industry with a set of problems that are unique, varied and that challenge me to be creative in finding their solutions. It is particularly gratifying that I get to do this with a team whose passion, ambition and work ethic is clearly evident in a product that is fast becoming a leader in the industry.

How did you get into wine/fermented beverages?

I’ve enjoyed drinking wine and other fermented beverages for many years. However, I quickly developed a genuine appreciation for the art and craft of winemaking soon after joining InnoVint. My appreciation for the winemaking process and culture was ultimately bolstered by the several occasions where I had the opportunity to visit the wineries of several InnoVint customers; there I was able to gain a different perspective on the people who use our product on a daily basis by listening to their stories and the histories of their vineyards.

How has your knowledge of winemaking grown since working with InnoVint?

Since joining InnoVint, my depth and breadth of knowledge about the winemaking process has grown substantially. Whereas previously I simply enjoyed the end product of a craft I only understood in the abstract, my first day with InnoVint was a deep dive into a domain and concepts that proved to be fascinating and also presented a number of technical challenges that don’t exist in other fields. That being said, I understand the need for hands-on practical experience with the winemaking process; to further my domain knowledge, I have undertaken some personal R&D cider making projects with my family, thanks to a high-yielding tree in our backyard that produces approximately 500lbs of Paradise apples each season. I still have much to learn, but this newfound passion is one that I will continue to develop over the years.

What musician(s)/band(s) are currently on frequent rotation in your Spotify app?

Music is one of my biggest passions and my musical tastes are all over the map. If it’s sunny outside and I need to do some creative thinking, I’ll generally be listening to Bossa Nova or Jazz including such artists as João Gilberto or Mal Waldron. When I need to pick up the pace, I’ll often fire up some Classic House (Kerri Chandler), Post-Punk (Gang of Four) or Dark Wave (Boy Harsher).

It’s a good thing I don’t share an office with anyone!

If you could choose one superpower to possess for the rest of your life, what would it be & why?

Levitation. Seems like it would be a fun thing to do spontaneously at a party. Does that seem odd?
